Making Salts
The basic neutralization reaction for making salts is:
Acid + Base → Salt + H20
Acid + Base → Salt + H20
- The salt is in neutral compound form as a result of neutralization
- Families of salts produced depend on the acid being used
Examples of Salts:
When using hydrochloric acid, chlorides are produced
HCl + NaOH → Chloride + H2O
HCl + NaOH → Chloride + H2O
When using sulfuric acid, sulfates are produced
SO4 + NaOH → Sulfates + H2O
SO4 + NaOH → Sulfates + H2O
When using nitric acid, nitrates are produced
NO3 + NaOH → Nitrates + H2O
NO3 + NaOH → Nitrates + H2O
When using carbonic acid, carbonates are produced
H2CO3 + NaOH → Carbonates + H2O
H2CO3 + NaOH → Carbonates + H2O
